Chandigarh's Goverment Hospital

Baby Charanjeet was born on 12 December 2009, one week before this image was taken. He was born at 32 weeks (more than two months premature) and weighed only 750 gm. He looks relatively snug in his incubator, but a wide view of the neonatal unit reveals that even keeping these fragile souls warm is a challenge without centrally regulated heating.

A visit to the children's wards confirms that many of the patients are slightly older versions of baby Charanjeet, and that their mothers are typically from nearby slums and villages, and that malnourishment during pregnancy was a significant factor in their early arrivals.

The twins shown below have been in hospital for almost a month already, but may be able to go home shortly.
